This bench was sculpted from a single log of green wood Elm. Great care and patience was required during the air-drying process to ensure the strength and stability of the finished piece.

The finishing method was done with flame, similar to shou sugi ban, a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation.

One Japanese translation of meditate, or “zenning out” as one writer put it, is 瞑想する (dark-thinking) meisou-suru. That concept resonates with me on this piece.
